How to order this book
The first appearance of this book in 1959 marked a new
departure in the study of the English Reformation: rather than
concentrating on the central administration Professor Dickens examined
the effects of political and religious change away from London,
revealing much in the process about contemporary attitudes and beliefs.
Even in Yorkshire Lollardy
survived and mingled gradually with continental Protestantism: as late
as the reign of Mary the unintellectual anti-clericalism typical of the
former movement was more likely to be found in the church courts than
were the new theological tenets of Lutheranism. The northern parish
clergy, although outwardly conformist, were for the most part unlearned
and reluctant to examine modern cultural and religious beliefs. Here
the Edwardian Reformers had limited opportunities to establish their
own views in the short time available. The effect of the Reformation
upon laymen is to be seen in the examples of Sir Francis Bigod, the
eccentric intellectual, Wilfred Holmes of Huntingdon, Yorkshire's first
"Protestant" poet and the outwardly unremarkable Robert Plumpton, whose
letters reveal the impact made on him by reading the Bible in English.
The inner strength of traditional Catholic belief is shown by the life
and writings of the curate of Adwick-le-Street, Robert Parkyn, who
continued to hold his benefice under Elilzabeth, but whose main
interests lay in the field of late medieval mysticism.
Above all Lollards and Protestants
conveys the life of a society with sympathy and understanding. While
many historians have followed Professor Dickens's lead into regional
history, very few have produced anything as well-written or al
lastingly valuable as this classic, which the author has brought up to
date with a new intorduction reviewing developments in the field
covered by the book since its first appearance.
