This report documents reasearch commissioned by English Heritage and carried out by the Department of Archaeology, University of Southampton, between January 1992 and March 1993. The research was concerned with the operation and effectiveness within the planning process of the system of evaluation of sites of potential archaeological importance, and focused on evaluation in Berkshire and Hampshire.
The report describes the development and current state of the process and methodology of evaluation, followed by a discussion of the aims and methodology of the research project, and the problems of data collection.
