How to order this book
No medieval emphasis. Desk-based archaeological assessment
and field evaluation of
development sites has become a familiar exercise over the past decade
or so. Not all early examples of what we might now call desk-based
assessments or field evaluations were carried out as systematically or
as rigorously as they are today. Collectively, however, the experience
that has been accumulated around the country has brought to
archaeological resource management a set of approaches and
methodologies which goes a logn way towards providing the information
that curators of the resource need in order to take informed views
about the preservation, conservation, and management of archaeological
remains.
This report is based on a
systematic survey of archaeological contractors and curators carrying
out desk-based assessments and field evaluations between 1982 and 1991.
In parallel with this national review, a detailed study of the
application and efficacy of field evaluation procedures in the counties
of Hampshire and Berkshire comprises volume 3 of the Planning for the Past studies, Decision-making
and Field Methods in Archaeological Evaluation. The report
on that project is complementary to this volume, and the two should be
read in conjunction.
