How to order this book
Pierce
the
Ploughman's Crede is a radical pro-Wycliffite polemic against the
friars,
while Richard the Redeless criticises Richard II's errors
before
his deposition, and recommends a more desirable course to Henry IV. Mum
and the Sothsegger, a sequel to Richard, complains of
corruption
in the Church and social hierarchy, and the dangers faced by would-be
reformers,
and The Crowned King exposes the sober issues behind Henry V's
much-trumpeted
military campaign against France.
The
original Middle
English texts are presented here with some modernised spelling,
marginal
glosses, and an extensive commentary. The Piers Plowman Tradition
gives new insight into these fascinating but neglected poems, which
were
a vigorous forum for political debate.
