This book grew out of a series of TV programmes which set out to tell the story of that formidable woman of property who became successively Mrs Robert Barlow, Lady Cavendish, Lady St. Loe, and Countess of Shrewsbury. The book gives an idea of like at Hardwick Hall four hundred years ago, behind the foreground of politics & conflicts in which Bess played a leading part.
